The most common variety of vape kits are MTL vape devices. Briefly summarised, MTL vape kits simulate the cigarette experience when used. We appreciate that this be confusing, which is why, over the next couple of minutes, we’ll succinctly explain what MTL vape kits are and help you determine whether this is the right vape device for your needs.
What is an MTL vape kit?
A mouth-to-lung (MTL) vape kit uses lower levels of power output to atomize 50/50 and high-PG e-liquids through high-resistance coils with an ohmage of 0.8ohms or higher. What does that mean? Well, this vape type is designed to give the same experience as smoking.
In mouth-to-lung vaping, the MTL kit, either through inhale activation or power button activation, delivers an acceptable amount of vapour that you can draw from your mouth and then down to your lungs (henceforth, the term mouth-to-lung).
Although it doesn’t produce large clouds seen in direct-to-lung (DTL) or direct-lung (DL) vapes, its smoking-like experience, coupled with amazing flavour production, makes it a popular choice for beginner vapers. This is why you’ll notice that vape starter kit models are engineered for mouth-to-lung vaping.
How To Know if Vape Is MTL?
You can know if a vape is MTL if the included coils or disposable refillable pod has high resistance. Another good indicator is power output, as most dedicated MTL vapes won’t have any need to offer adjustable wattage higher than 20W – 30W.
While it’s often the case that a smaller vape is more likely to be an MTL vape pen, be sure to check, as many compact sub-ohm kits are available and won’t provide the same MTL vaping experience. Also keep in mind that an MTL vape kit can also have an adjustable airflow slider.
What Wattage for MTL Vape?
This will vary depending on the specific coil being used – or pod in the case of an MTL pod kit – but MTL vape kits will usually offer a wattage output of between 10W-30W. Anything higher than that will run the risk of burning out the coil, which won’t be built to handle high-stress outputs of power.
A number of MTL vape kits will have an optional Smart mode, which automatically assigns the correct wattage for the installed coil, but this is not yet a standard feature you can expect to find in every kit.
Can You Use Normal Vape Juice in MTL?
Both MTL kits and vape pens require thin e-liquids or nic salts, with a VG/PG ratio of either 50 / 50 or a higher PG content than VG. Why? This is because vegetable glycerin (VG) is thicker than propylene glycol (PG). If you use an e-liquid with a high VG content, it will be too viscous and thick to absorb into the cotton wicks used in MTL vape coils.
Remember, high VG e-liquid creates larger clouds, and MTL vaping is more concerned with cigarette-style puffs that produce less vapour. Don’t worry; there are hundreds of MTL vape juice flavours available. If you want our recommendations, you can read our best MTL vape juices review.
Does MTL use less liquid?
MTL kits do technically use less vape juice. DTL or DL vaping will tend to eat up your e-liquid very quickly due to the higher power output of the vape device, resulting in faster liquid atomisation. In comparison, even a heavy smoker will find a bottle of MTL e-liquid lasting the better part of a week.
