50/50 vape juice is produced with the perfect balance of VG and PG, two ingredients used in 99% of vape liquid. But is a 50/50 e-liquid suitable for your vape kit and your vaping style? What does 50/50 mean in vape juice? Read on for a brief and simple explanation of 50/50 e-liquids.
What Are 50/50 E-liquids?
50/50 e-liquids, as mentioned earlier, consist of 50% propylene glycol (PG) and 50% vegetable glycerin (VG); henceforth, its name “50/50.” But what does 50/50 precisely mean in terms of flavour and cloud production?
As you might already know, there are different ratios in e-liquids. Regardless of what blend you prefer, you will always find PG and VG in the ingredients. (Of course, the nic strength as well).

When the PG (the ingredient responsible for flavour carrying and throat hit) and the VG (responsible for cloud production, smoothness, and sweetness) are an equal mix, you’ll get a versatile e-liquid that offers good flavour, low to medium throat hit, and minimal vapour production (like a cigarette’s smoke).

What’s the Difference Between 50/50 and Nic Salt?
The difference between 50/50 and nic salt is the vape juice composition.
Let’s first answer the question, “what are nic salts?” Most nic salts are 50/50, but not all 50/50 vape juice is nic salted. ‘50/50’ refers only to the base mix composition of the vape juice, whereas ‘nic salts’ refers to e-liquids that use benzoic acid to reduce the alkalinity of traditional nicotine solution. This results in a far smoother inhale following vapour production.
We mentioned earlier that most nic salts are 50/50, but it isn’t a universal case. Some high-VG shortfills, such as those produced by ZAP!, come with a complimentary nic salt shot, allowing you to enjoy smooth nic salts in a DTL e-liquid, albeit at a much lower nic strength than usual.
Does 50/50 Vape Juice Taste Better?
Generally speaking, 50/50 juice does often have more flavour than high-VG. This is because PG acts as a better neutral carrier for the flavour concentrates, which do not ‘blossom’ across VG quite as well.
Something must also be said for the concentrated hit of a tight 50/50 e-liquid draw. High-VG inhales produce a lot more vapour, spreading the flavourings across a much larger amount of cloud.
Many MTL e-liquids, such as those in the MIST Originals range, are produced at a high-PG ratio of 70 PG / 30 VG. But is 50/50 or 70/30 better in terms of flavour? There isn’t much difference, as both 50/50 and 70/30 tend to atomise into the same volume.
Is 50/50 Vape Juice Strong?
A 50/50 juice is strong when compared to most high-VG e-liquids due to what is usually a much higher potential nicotine strength. 50/50 e-liquid also tends to have a bit more of a throat hit, making high-VG vape juices generally easier to inhale.
Is 50/50 OK for Sub Ohm?
50/50 is not suited for sub-ohm because of the juice’s thin consistency and the usually higher nicotine content.
If poured into a DTL tank containing a DTL coil, 50/50 e-liquid will often leak from the airflow ports because the cottons in the sub-ohm coils aren’t designed to capture and soak such runny liquid.
On top of this, 50/50 e-liquid vaped from a direct-to-lung tank will usually have a rough throat hit due to the higher nicotine strengths.
Think of 50/50 vaping as a small and powerful shot of liquor and high-VG vape juice as a large and mild pint of beer; they’ll get you to the same place, but drinking a pint of beer at liquor strength would be unpleasantly strong.

What Wattage Is Best for 50/50 Vape Juice?
The best wattage for 50/50 e-liquid is within the range of 9W – 16W, as these are standard outputs for MTL coils. Using a higher wattage than this will likely burn out your MTL coil, and a lower wattage won’t generate a satisfying amount of vapour.

To summarize, 50/50 e-liquid have 50% PG and 50% VG, which is best for mouth-to-lung vaping because they offer the perfect balance of flavour and throat hit and little vapour production. Don’t forget that you shouldn’t pair 50/50 vape juices with sub-ohm devices.
