Welcome to MIST’s Ultimate Guide to CBD Vaping! By now, many of you will have already heard about CBD. However, considering the plant it’s derived from evolved over 28 million years ago, and the oldest evidence of said plant’s use was discovered in a 2500 year old Chinese graveyard, it’s taken us rather a long time to actually study this miraculous cannabinoid.
CBD was first successfully extracted in 1940, and one of it’s primary researchers from the early 1960s stated that, when compared with other plant-based drugs, “the chemistry of cannabis was not well known“. Though research has been ongoing, it is only fairly recently, in the 21st century, that CBD has become widely available to the public. After a long and arduous journey, often beset by legal complications, the myriad benefits of CBD are now finally becoming recognised.
But what about CBD Vaping?
While not as many studies exist on the benefits of vaping CBD, many prominent figures from a variety of disciplines are advocates of it. For example, UFC fighter Nate Diaz, who brazenly vaped CBD oil in his post-match press conference in 2016.
So, if you’re someone who perhaps is new to CBD, or may be interested in vaping CBD oil, our Ultimate Guide to CBD Vaping could be what the doctor ordered! We’ve pulled out all the stops to ensure we’ve provided you with all the information you need to make an informed decision about whether CBD vaping could be for you.
So relax, and take a leisurely scroll through all things cannabidiol!

1. What is CBD?
Before we get to CBD vaping, let’s explore what all the fuss is about CBD itself. CBD (short for cannabidiol) is, after THC, the second most prevalent phytocannabinoid (a term for one of the over 113 chemical compounds found in the genus of cannabis plants).
CBD products are either derived from hemp or other strains of cannabis. Hemp is a specific variety of C. sativa containing minimal THC. It is an extremely versatile plant that has been used throughout history (and is still used today) to make a staggering variety of products—cloth, cosmetics, rope, wood preservative, detergents, printer’s ink and more!
Due to the legal status of cannabis, most CBD products are derived from hemp. However, despite ongoing debate on whether the efficacy of CBD is impacted depending on if it is derived from hemp or cannabis, it’s important to note that the molecular structure of CBD remains the same.
No doubt most of you are familiar with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), due to the fact it’s responsible for producing the “high” associated with cannabis. Funnily enough, THC and CBD have the exact same molecular structure (30 hydrogen atoms, 21 carbon atoms and 2 oxygen atoms), but the subtle difference in the way these atoms are arranged accounts for totally different effects in our bodies.
2. How does CBD affect my body?
Bear with us, because we’re about to get pretty scientific!
Before we talk about the effects of CBD, it’s necessary to outline the powerhouse that is the endocannabinoid system (ECS).
The endocannabinoid system is something we share with nearly all animal life and—though experts are still studying the integral role this system plays in our bodies—what we do know is that it is an intricate, cell-signalling system partly responsible for regulating a range of functions like sleep, mood, memory, appetite and more.
To put it very simply, your body produces molecules called endocannabinoids to keep your internal processes running smoothly.
Endocannabinoid receptors are found throughout your body, the two main ones being CB1 receptors (mainly present in your central nervous system), and CB2 receptors (mainly present in the immune cells in your peripheral nervous system).
Endocannabinoids can bind to either of these two receptors in your body, the effects depending upon where the receptor is located. For example, an endocannabinoid may target a CB1 receptor to relieve pain, or a CB2 receptor to signal to you that your body is experiencing inflammation.
Right, got that?
Essentially, the jury is still out on the nuances of exactly how CBD interacts with your endocannabinoid receptors, but medical experts currently believe CBD provides its benefits in innumerable ways.
Two such examples being:
CBD inhibits the enzyme Fatty Acid Amide Hydrolase (FAAH), the primary molecule responsible for breaking down and recycling endocannabinoids.
CBD potentiates glycine receptors (the most ubiquitous inhibitory receptor in the central nervous system) which most likely reduces inflammation and chronic pain.
If this is over your head don’t worry, you’re not alone! Anyway, now the science is out of the way let’s get into how CBD can potentially benefit you.
3. What are the benefits of CBD?
Due to the legal status of cannabis serving as something of a roadblock for researchers, the benefits of CBD have only relatively recently been properly studied. A large case study conducted in 2019 concluded that CBD, “may hold benefit for anxiety-related disorders“.
Furthemore, Yasmin Hurd, the director of the Addiction Institute of Mount Sinai in New York City, stated that “CBD is not a scam,”. No wonder, as Hurd led a double-bind study that found that CBD successfully reduced cravings and anxiety in recovering heroin addicts.
If that wasn’t enough, CBD has also been found to aid in the fight against cancer! The British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology noted that cancer cells are prevented from spreading throughout the body when the patient is treated with CBD, which tends to suppress the growth of cancers and may in fact promote the death of these cancerous cells.
There is even research published by the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease which found that CBD prevented social recognition deficit in subjects.
This is just a small segment of the vast amount of research concluding that CBD has medicinal value. Though there seems to be enough compelling evidence out there, more studies need to be conducted to give CBD a firmer stamp of official approval. Studies aside, the fact remains, that there has been widespread anecdotal evidence that CBD has significantly helped in treating a variety of different ailments and conditions. These include:
- Chronic Anxiety
- Pain
- Inflammation
- Depression
- Substance Abuse
- PTSD
- Sleep Disorders
- Fibromyalgia
- Parkinson’s
- Schizophrenia
- Psoriasis
4. Is CBD harmful?
Though, technically speaking, it is also psychoactive, CBD does not produce the “high” that THC does.
A report from the World Health Organisation concluded that, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.” The properties of CBD even mean that it can reduce some of the more unpleasant effects of THC—like anxiety or sedation.
5. What are the benefits of vaping CBD?
CBD vaping is exactly what you think—you absorb CBD through your lungs by vaping e-liquid infused with CBD extract.
CBD vaping is exactly what you think—you absorb CBD through your lungs by vaping e-liquid infused with CBD extract.
CBD e-liquid is very similar to other e-liquids, in that the primary ingredients are VG (vegetable glycerine) and PG (propylene glycol). The difference being that a dose of CBD extract is added to the blend rather than tobacco. While there are many CBD products which are intended to be ingested orally, there are a number of benefits to vaping CBD instead.
When vaping CBD, it passes through the lungs and rapidly enters the bloodstream. Though consuming edible CBD products will offer similar relief, it takes far longer for CBD to take effect when entering the body through the digestive system. On top of this, orally administered CBD products can result in delayed and inconsistent absorption rates, which can be unwanted when you’re seeking immediate pain relief or need to offset a potential oncoming seizure.
Finally, for many, vaping is a pleasurable activity in its own right. If you get to kill two birds with one vape it’s a win-win!
Yet a choice still remains. What type of CBD vape juice should you go for?
6. What types of CBD oils are there?
Before we discuss CBD vape juice, we believe you’d be well served by familiarising yourself with the three main types of CBD oil they use. (Yes, I know this is complicated but stick with us!)
These are full-spectrum CBD, broad-spectrum CBD, and CBD isolate.
In order to help you make an informed decision about what time of CBD vape juice could be for you, we’ve given you little information on each type.
Full-Spectrum CBD
Like the name suggests, full-spectrum CBD vape juice uses CBD that contains all of the cannabinoids, terpenes, and various other compounds produced by the cannabis plant it was sourced from. Like with other CBD products, CBD will of course be the most pronounced cannabinoid, but full-spectrum CBD products can also contain very low levels of THC. It’s such a tiny amount (less than 0.3%) that it is supremely unlikely to give you any sort of “high”. But still, it’s important to bear in mind if you’re looking to completely avoid THC.
The reason full-spectrum products are considered to be so effective by their users, is because of something called the entourage effect. And no, we’re not talking about becoming a success in Hollywood! Put simply, the entourage effect is a theory that cannabis is most effective when all of its components work together rather than in isolation. While more research is needed to add credence to the theory, many users swear by it.
Broad-Spectrum CBD
Mostly produced from industrial hemp, broad-spectrum CBD vape juice contains CBD with all of the cannabinoids and only the THC removed. As broad-spectrum CBD retains the terpenes and cannabinoids it is still able to produce the entourage effect.
Isolate CBD
Also typically derived from industrial hemp, CBD isolate vape juice contains CBD which is purely CBD. Due to this, a lot of the other potentially beneficial elements of the plant are lost, but CBD isolates are still able to provide the positive effects associated with CBD.
